Dance - Volcanoes

Year 3 have been revisiting their geography learning from the spring term by turning their understanding of volcanoes into dances! They have explored the shapes and movements of different types of rocks tumbling down the side of a mountain, and considered how the convergence and divergence of tectonic plates could be shown through different body movements.

Science - Forces and Magnets

The children learned about lots of different forces, including friction, gravity and air resistance. We also looked at magnetic forces and found out that the different poles of a magnet can attract or repel each other. We tested the magnets we had available at school to see which was the strongest, by comparing how many paperclips each one could hold up for 30 seconds.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

by C.S. Lewis

Sycamore have been writing narratives with description and direct speech based on our class book.

If you have enjoyed reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, why not try some other books in the Narnia series?

Mr Tumnus’ house was safe, warm and silent. When Lucy arrived, she felt calm and safe.

“Your house is lovely,” said Lucy. She felt unusually tired, almost like she was already in bed.

“Would you like some tea?” Mr Tumnus asked. Lucy looked around her and saw an arched mantelpiece bridging a warm, crackling fire which heated up the room.

“Yes please, Mr Tumnus,” said Lucy, staring out the window. The weather outside was cold, dark and horrible. It was like they were in a snow-globe which someone had shaken up. After tea, Lucy felt very full. She had eaten two slices of whole-grain bread, smeared all over with luscious yellow butter.

Mr Tumnus’ house was comfortable, old-fashioned and warm. As soon as Lucy had comforted herself, she felt like she could drift right off to sleep.

“This is the most supreme house I have ever visited,” Lucy told Mr Tumnus. The faun seemed delighted by the compliment.

"Can I offer you any cookies?” he asked, gesturing to some chocolate chips on a worn, smooth tea table.

“I would love a few,” Lucy gently replied.

After many hours, Lucy felt as if she was going to explode. She had eaten two slices of scrumptious fudge cake and five delicious ham sandwiches.

“I thank you for your compliment, O Daughter of Eve,” said Mr Tumnus, quickly turning away from the door and back again.

Lucy hadn’t realised before because of the fudge cake and delightful ham sandwiches, but she suddenly realised that Mr Tumnus had started to cry.

“Oh, Mr Tumnus, whatever is the matter?” she exclaimed.

Rocks and Fossils at the Museum

We visited the Horniman Museum to take part in their workshop on rocks and fossils. We looked at and handled a number of real fossil samples dating back millions of years, including fossilised crocodile poo! The children had a wonderful time digging for fossils in sand and using flow charts and prompt cards to help them identify their findings. Thank you as always to the parent volunteers who made this trip possible.

We had the opportunity to make and try ugali with stew.

In mathematics, we have been learning about position, direction and movement.

We have used the vocabulary: left, right, forwards, backwards, turn right, turn left, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Baking

We had the pleasure of being invited to bake bread. We learned about the process of proofing, shaping and cooking bread as well as the understanding the ingredients that are used to make bread. Can you name them? See below for the answers

Answers - yeast, salt, flour, water and sugar

The Climate in Kenya

In Geography, the pupils have been learning about Kenya. We have identified on a map where the UK is in relation to Kenya as well as the countries that Kenya borders. We have also talked about the different climates with in Kenya and presented our findings to the class.

Horniman Bakery

Sycamore read and followed recipes, tasted breads from all over the world, designed their own bread and their own bakery logos and transformed the classroom into a bakery for the end of their Bread topic. The bread we made was sold in a bakery sale in the playground!

Fire fire!

Sycamore made their own tudor houses as part of their topic The Great Fire of London. We burned them down and watched as the fire spread quickly between the houses because they were so close together. The only house left was the one that was set apart from the others!
