Ash Class Page

Welcome to our class page

Our teachers are Miss Graham and Hayley.
Please explore the pages below to help further support your child at home and to find out what learning and fun we are having!

Capacity investigation

To help understand what capacity is, we started an investigation to see whose container could old the most water. The children each chose a container they thought would hold the most, then we poured them in one at a time into a larger container. We recorded each person’s name to refer back to later. Some of the children were very surprised their container hadn’t held as much water as they thought it would.

Trip to the Cutty Sark

We enjoyed an educational visit to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. We travelled on the overground train and bus to get there. We watched the river for a while before climbing aboard the ship. We ate our lunch then got started on the musical activities. We sang songs and listened to different instruments as we learnt about what the Cutty Sark shipped and what life was like on the ship as a sailor. The children learnt lots of facts and were really well behaved. Well done Ash Class.

Celebrating Lunar New Year

To help understand how people celebrate the Lunar New Year, we took part in a few different activities. We smelt incense outside, as people can light this to help clear their house. We also did a cleaning competition to see who could get the dirtiest cloth, as people often clean their house to prepare for the new year.

In PE, we have been doing Lunar New Year themed dancing and for our week focusing on dragons, we worked in groups to make a moving dragon using a canon effect.

Porridge making and tasting

The Class helped make porridge following a set of instructions. We then got to try the porridge and added some toppings to them. It was jussssst right!

Searching for signs of winter

Ash Class have been exploring the changing of the seasons, and discovering the signs of winter.

They have found alot of frost and ice in the playground, and have been investigating different ways they can you use the ice.

We found thinner ice that would break easily, and harder ice that we couldn’t break, even with a stick!

So we set up an experiment- will the ice melt by the end of the day? The children voted for what they thought would happen, and the following day we had a discussion about the outcome.

Trip to the Post Office

In class, we wrote Holiday cards to send to a family member. We decorated the front of the card too, and visited our local Post Office. We put the stamp on ourselves and posted the letter in the postbox. It was interesting to see how a real post office works and compared it to the Jolly Postman, our current focus story.

Trip to the theatre

Alongside Year 1 and Year 2, we visited The Albany Theatre in Deptford. We watched ‘The Light Princess’. Ash Class watched quietly and joined in with the songs- they were the perfect audience!

We used trains and buses to get us to the theatre, and they showed great listening skills. Well done Ash Class!

Forest School fun

On Wednesdays, Ash Class spend their afternoon in Forest School with Miss Roche.

This week they made leaf ghosts. They searched for a spooky-looking leaf, and used their fine-motor skills to glue and stick googly eyes on.

Planting flowers

To help brighten up our mud kitchen and to encourage the children to look after living things, Ash Class helped plant panseys and primroses.

Rain water and our wind dial

We have been collecting rainwater to see how much has fallen and to discuss if there has been more rainfall than the day/week before. We have been using language such as more than and less than.

This week has been super windy, so after making wind streamers, the children had the idea to stick one in the ground so we can see the direction of the wind. With Miss Grahams’s help, NSEW signs were added, for us to observe and learn about which direction the wind is travelling.

Diwali and Diya Lamps

This week the children learnt about the festival of light, Diwali. They learnt the story of Rama and Sita, and explored the different ways that people celebrate the festival.

The children also made diya lamps out of salt dough. Before painting, they designed their pattern and then copied these once the lamps had dried. They were really proud of their creations.

Trip to Sydenham Woods

We visited Sydenham Woods to spot signs of autumn and complete a nature hunt. We found lots of beautiful autumnal leaves, spider webs, discovered what bark is and listened to the sounds around us. Crunching leaves, bird noises and excited children! We even found a cave that we thought was the perfect home for The Gruffalo.
