PE and Extra-curricular Sports Provision at Horniman School
At Horniman we believe that physical education has a vital and unique role to play in a child’s development. We therefore provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum, as well as offering a wide range of extra-curricular clubs. Our children experience a wide range of individual, partner and team activities that promote a healthy active approach to life. The range of physical activities we provide includes: athletics, cricket, basketball, games, gymnastics and dance. All activities are designed to be enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful and regular, to give children the maximum benefit.
Reception children take part in a weekly PE and Forest School lesson and have unlimited access to outdoor play. Children in Years 1-6 participate in two weekly PE lessons and shorter ‘Fitness for Life’ or yoga sessions.
In addition, children in Year 4 also attend weekly swimming lessons at Forest Hill Pool for the whole academic year which we feel allows enough time to get the whole class swimming.
In 2017 we used some of our sports premium funding to develop a 'Horniman Mile'. This is a circuit which enables children to run a mile. On the circuit there are also activity stations, devised by the school council, that encourage the children to do different types of exercise, which can be used at play times or in PE lessons.
Each year, the school celebrates an 'Arts Week' and invites a dance instructor to work with the whole school over a week. This culminates in a performance of the dances for parents and carers. Previous themes have included: traditional English folk dance and street dance.
Outdoor and adventure experiences are offered to our Year 6 children during their residential visit to Mill Rythe in Hayling Island. They also have the opportunity to take part in Bikeability in the autumn term which provides road safety training for cyclists.
At Horniman, we provide opportunities for children to be active and stay fit during their lunchtimes. Play leaders organise basketball and cricket games, and small equipment is available for free play.
We also offer a wide range of extracurricular sports clubs taught by specialists either before or after school. Currently we offer Tennis, Boys and Girls Football, Cricket, Multi-skills (KS1), Karate, Gymnastics (KS1&2) and Dance (ballet). Many of the clubs offer the opportunity to be graded.
We believe in providing opportunities for children to participate in competitive school sports. As well as our annual Sports Day held at James Allen’s Girls’ school grounds, we regularly take part in:
· Inter-schools competitions organised by our Sports Coordinator
· Lewisham Schools Festivals
· Lewisham Schools Swimming Gala
· Lewisham Saturday Football (year 5 & 6)
