In line with the calculation policy, children at Horniman are taught the calculation methods in a step-by-step approach,. Children begin formal column methods in Year 3, starting with the "expanded" approach where the numbers are partitioned using knowledge of place value but the calculation is presented in the traditional column format. This approach ensures children have a solid understanding of place value but can be confusing for parents. We hope these video tutorials will help you and your child to continue practising calculations at home.
There is a difference between short and long methods. Short division and multiplication is dividing or multiplying by a one-digit number: Long division and multiplication entails multiplying by a two-digit number (or greater). The methods, particularly in division, are slightly different. Long division is not taught until Year 6.
